In the late 1960′s, the punkish Vancouver band “Seeds of Time” formed the basis for what would eventually become Prism. Their bad-boy image was evinced in an early regional hit single “My Home Town” in 1969. Marking the band as recording artists, the record and follow-up “Cryin’ the Blues” scored modest success in an infant Canadian music market. Ten years later bandmates Lindsay Mitchell, Al Harlow, Rocket Norton, and John Hall would find themselves together again, climbing international charts as Prism. Other key players who made Prism possible came from an early ’70s Vancouver jazz band “Sunshyne”, yielding trumpeter Bruce Fairbairn plus songwriter & multi-instrumentalist Jim Vallance. Singer Ron Tabak was recruited from the local circuit, and this loose community of musicians combined resources in a Vancouver recording studio in July, 1975.

Emily Jordan is 19, but on her self-titled debut CD she sings with the hard-won wisdom of her R&B heroes. Jordan started singing Jackson 5 hits with her father’s legendary, Winnipeg band, Fabulous George and the Zodiacs when she was seven years old. She made her first record as a ten year old, and by 15 Jordan was working with some of Canada’s top producers and writers. Her first single, Since Tomorrow, received national hit radio airplay.

Emily Jordan (Spark Records) teams the teen R&B diva with talented urban music veterans, Troy Samson and Chin to produce a work of heart and soul.

Samson has worked his studio magic on acts ranging from soulDecision, Craig Smart and Mary Zilba to Crash Test Dummies and Popstar’s television winners, Velvet Empire.

Chin formed big-selling Bass Is Base while producing work by Maestro Fresh Wes, Kish and Main Ingredient. Bass Is Base won a JUNO for their debut CD, and Chin’s solo CD was nominated for a JUNO. His production credits include work with Moka Only and Kinnie Starr, and he’s remixed tracks by the Barenaked Ladies, Colin James and 54-40.

On Jordan’s debut CD the veteran producers share writing credits with the talented, young singer on a silky song cycle with a distinctly urban flavour. Sade, Anita Baker and modern soul men like Maxwell and D’Angelo are echoed in Jordan’s understated funk and R&B. On T-t-tell Me, rappers Checkmate and Concise inject hip-hop bravado into the sexy undertow of the production team’s sonic flow. The rappers’ street-inspired narratives underline and accentuate Jordan’s surprising maturity and artistic reach.

Another of the new CD’s highlights, When I Gave My Heart To You, uses Samson’s stark, unadorned production to frame a riveting, dramatic reading that hints at Jordan’s youthful vulnerability, while Start Of Something and Thoughts Of You use tight, rhythm-charged arrangements to showcase Jordan’s sultry, soulful vocals.

Echoing back to R&B’s pop glory days and radio hits by Stevie Wonder and Earth Wind and Fire, Jordan’s Beautiful has already found a place in the television series Just Cause. Beautiful is the first single from the album. Accompanying the single is a killer music video produced by Triton Films and directed by up and coming Tara Hungerford.

This is more than a collection of beat-driven, urban love songs. This recording announces the emergence of a brilliant, young talent.
