I Dare You is a testament to Ali’s musical purity. In the studio, Ali and the musicians worked together to flesh out the songs and record them live from the floor to tape, capturing the essence of the music. The album was launched with a live performance that was recorded for a national broadcast on CBC Radio 2’s “Canada Live” which aired in February 2010. As one reviewer notes of this performance, “Milner takes the audience on an impressive journey through boogie-woogie, soulful ballads, . . . rock ‘n’ roll, R&B, show tunes, old school – she does it all.” Ubyssey

The new record is done and it heralds a new beginning for Laura Doyle. A complete departure from the electronic fascination of her first CD “No Easy Answers” the new album is all real, all live off the floor, all performance. With a new band she calls Passionfish, a new sound and a new producer, Doyle has never sounded better
Finding it difficult to perform the last record live, Laura Doyle decided she wanted to capture the dynamics of what had already been happening in her live shows. The vision was homespun sophistication, a harmonizing of paradoxes, a balancing of polarities. The songs are just that. Both meticulously arranged and yet freely performed by such great players as Randall Stoll (Tom Cochran & kd Lang) on drums, Miles Hill (Roy Forbes, Dee Daniels) on bass and Lanois-esque guitar work from Andreas Schuld. Producer Graeme Coleman steps out as one of the Westcoast’s finest musicians on the piano, adding unforgettable motifs and layering in loads of vibe with intuitive and dynamic Hammond B3 organ performances.
Even in the lyric content the paradoxes continue from the profoundly exotic and sultry “In Everything” to the downright cheeky sass in “Someone” where Doyle writes: they say no man’s an island Îcause we’re born without our teeth/ you can tell me love ain’t worth it but I’ve seen the way you weep. Her new material has a worldliness, a maturity; a deep understanding of the folly of obsession, the faithless meandering of the runaway, the daily struggle to stay buoyant. Doyle’s songs offer something better than pop confection, something much more than self absorbed navel gazing – in the metaphors, in the poetry, in the hypnotic rhythms and sweet voiced laments you may find a kind of redemption and surprising lightness of being.
Laura Doyle’s 2001 CD, “No Easy Answers”, has been widely featured in movies and TV shows, and not just as obscure background pieces. She has a knack for getting to the heart of things and the entertainment industry has noticed. She now has over twenty TV and film placements including 2 songs featured in the Canadian film “Suddenly Naked” which both earned Genie Award nominations in 2003. This easy marriage with the screen should come as no surprise, as Doyle began her career in the entertainment industry as a TV screenwriter in Los Angeles and Vancouver on mostly teen programs including “Neon Rider”, “Madison”, MTV’s “Undressed” and the CBS drama “Early Edition”.
The new CD “dark horse” is being released in May and Laura Doyle plans to spend the summer and fall touring.

The band had been on an upwardly mobile streak since “Not Ready to Go” first came pumping out of Canadian radio back in 2003. They wasted no time piling success on top of success, watching their stature grow with multiple hit singles and an incomparable live show, courting exhaustion while they fanned out across the world and carved an eccentric and stubborn path through an industry demanding that they always “compete.”

In the late 1960′s, the punkish Vancouver band “Seeds of Time” formed the basis for what would eventually become Prism. Their bad-boy image was evinced in an early regional hit single “My Home Town” in 1969. Marking the band as recording artists, the record and follow-up “Cryin’ the Blues” scored modest success in an infant Canadian music market. Ten years later bandmates Lindsay Mitchell, Al Harlow, Rocket Norton, and John Hall would find themselves together again, climbing international charts as Prism. Other key players who made Prism possible came from an early ’70s Vancouver jazz band “Sunshyne”, yielding trumpeter Bruce Fairbairn plus songwriter & multi-instrumentalist Jim Vallance. Singer Ron Tabak was recruited from the local circuit, and this loose community of musicians combined resources in a Vancouver recording studio in July, 1975.

Emily Jordan is 19, but on her self-titled debut CD she sings with the hard-won wisdom of her R&B heroes. Jordan started singing Jackson 5 hits with her father’s legendary, Winnipeg band, Fabulous George and the Zodiacs when she was seven years old. She made her first record as a ten year old, and by 15 Jordan was working with some of Canada’s top producers and writers. Her first single, Since Tomorrow, received national hit radio airplay.
Emily Jordan (Spark Records) teams the teen R&B diva with talented urban music veterans, Troy Samson and Chin to produce a work of heart and soul.
Samson has worked his studio magic on acts ranging from soulDecision, Craig Smart and Mary Zilba to Crash Test Dummies and Popstar’s television winners, Velvet Empire.
Chin formed big-selling Bass Is Base while producing work by Maestro Fresh Wes, Kish and Main Ingredient. Bass Is Base won a JUNO for their debut CD, and Chin’s solo CD was nominated for a JUNO. His production credits include work with Moka Only and Kinnie Starr, and he’s remixed tracks by the Barenaked Ladies, Colin James and 54-40.
On Jordan’s debut CD the veteran producers share writing credits with the talented, young singer on a silky song cycle with a distinctly urban flavour. Sade, Anita Baker and modern soul men like Maxwell and D’Angelo are echoed in Jordan’s understated funk and R&B. On T-t-tell Me, rappers Checkmate and Concise inject hip-hop bravado into the sexy undertow of the production team’s sonic flow. The rappers’ street-inspired narratives underline and accentuate Jordan’s surprising maturity and artistic reach.
Another of the new CD’s highlights, When I Gave My Heart To You, uses Samson’s stark, unadorned production to frame a riveting, dramatic reading that hints at Jordan’s youthful vulnerability, while Start Of Something and Thoughts Of You use tight, rhythm-charged arrangements to showcase Jordan’s sultry, soulful vocals.
Echoing back to R&B’s pop glory days and radio hits by Stevie Wonder and Earth Wind and Fire, Jordan’s Beautiful has already found a place in the television series Just Cause. Beautiful is the first single from the album. Accompanying the single is a killer music video produced by Triton Films and directed by up and coming Tara Hungerford.
This is more than a collection of beat-driven, urban love songs. This recording announces the emergence of a brilliant, young talent.
